David was from Portland, Oregon. He was the kind of brother that ate his sister Elizabeth’s homemade cookies, even though she added 1 cup of salt instead of 1 teaspoon. He was the kind of son who was a gentle warrior and made his parents, Jim and Marilyn Weisenburg, proud. He was the kind of person who made friends easily, had a gentle spirit, and a contagious laugh. He was the kind of Staff Sergeant who was dedicated to the soldiers who served under him. David J. Weisenburg served God and his country, and loved humanity enough to make the ultimate sacrifice for freedom in America and around the world.
He was the kind of young person who served as chaplain’s assistant in Kuwait and Korea after graduating high school, followed by enlisting in the Oregon National Guard. He was the kind of employee who worked hard everyday for Star Park in Portland while furthering his education at Portland State University, when he wasn’t serving in the United States Army. He was the kind of Sunday school teacher who could always comfort the 3-year-olds when they were upset about being left by their parents and keep them entertained. He was the kind of high school swim team coach who was always smiling and had the loudest and goofiest laugh. He was the kind of soldier who would come home and want to go back because people depended on him and he had a job to do. He was the kind of guy who you would want on your team.
He is the kind of guy that we thank for his selfless sacrifice, the kind whose service we are profoundly grateful for. Staff Sergeant David Jamesrober Weisenburg is truly an American Hero.
