LCPL Derek Jones was born in Portland, Oregon. He grew up in Salem and Eugene and graduated from Sprague High School in 2003. Derek enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2004. He was stationed in Kailua, Hawaii. He had deployed to Afghanistan in 2005, While serving his current tour in Iraq a roadside bomb killed him.
Derek enjoyed playing basketball, racquetball and golf. He competed in the high school nationals for racquetball in St. Louis his senior year. He also loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping with his family and friends.
LCPL Jones married Pamela Petty on January 20, 2005. They lived on base in Hawaii where they were raising their daughter Madison. Derek tried skydiving in Hawaii and it only took one time to have him realize that once was enough. Leisure time was spent with his family and friends. Barbecues were a weekly occurrence and a chance for his Marine buddies and their families to relax.
Derek’s smile and positive attitude were his trademarks.
