SGT ‘Doc’ Ryan Baum was KIA May 18, 2007 in Karmah, Iraq. His place amongst his family, friends and and colleagues is defined by the variety of life roles he so successfully filled. He was a father, husband, son, Grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, friend and soldier. SGT Baum was a 1997 graduate of Smokey Hill High School in Aurora, CO. Some of his passions were football, baseball, lacrosse, camping, family gatherings and defending his country.
Ryan was an Army Ranger medic called “Doc Baum”. His fellow soldiers described him as the finest American soldier – talented, dedicated and proud. He was just a day away from a two-week leave to witness the birth of his first child, a daughter. Instead, Ryan volunteered for one last mission in Iraq because he didn’t want to let the men in his unit down – he was that rare human being who held duty and sacrifice above his own needs and wants.
