Ryan Michael Lumley graduated from Cedar Key High School in 2008 and enlisted in the Army. School officials remember Ryan as a good kid who was pleasant to be around. Specialist Lumley was active in sports and clubs.

“He did discus and shot put — he still holds our school record in shot put,” said history teacher and track coach Brad Penney. “He was a great kid, a hard worker. He was a fun-loving kid— he really worked on his shot put and discus technique. His senior year he was interested in going into the military and looked forward to it.” Mr. Penney added that he was broken up by Ryan’s death and praised Specialist Lumley for serving his country.

Cedar Key High School Principal Sue Ice spoke of Specialist Lumley, “He was a very likable student — well-liked by all of his classmates. He was active in extra-curricular activities. I just think of him as a very good citizen. We’re all very upset about it.”

Ryan was born on May 8, 1990 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Specialist Lumley joined the Army in 2009 and completed his boot camp and AIT at Ft. Benning, GA. Ryan was stationed at Ft. Bliss where he excelled at his duties. Specialist Lumley met the love of his life and was married to Kimber in March 2010. Specialist Lumley was a proud member of the Action Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment. ” Specialist Lumley will forever serve as an example of heart and dedication that will be the standard against which all measured in Action Company”. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten by his loved ones and Brothers in Arms…”I’ll Try Sir”.

The family requests donations in Ryan’s honor be made to The Fisher House or The Wounded Warrior Project.

Specialist Lumley is remembered by friends and family:
