Staff Sergeant Darryl Demetrial Booker of Amelia, Virginia, was a Manchester High School graduate.
He joined the Virginia Army Guard in September 1987. He had served in Iraq and Bosnia before his latest deployment to the Middle East. He was married, had a 16-year-old daughter and four step-children. He was active in his church, the Mount Gilead Full Gospel International Ministries in Richmond, and had a faith that gave him a sense of ease. At about 6 feet 5 inches, with hands “as big as waffles,” he was known in the unit as “Big Daddy.”
He died at age 37 in Baghdad on January 20, 2007, when the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter he was in crashed.
